” be amazed that i can also read my husband’s mind…shudder. one of the keys to prevent toddler temper tantrum is nurturing your child’s autonomy if children are criticized, helicoptered, micro-managed, or not given the opportunity to explore or assert themselves, they may become overly dependent on their parents or caregivers . co-dependent kiddos tend to be shy or skittish around other children and are slow to adapt to new social situations because over time they’ve lost some self-esteem and confidence. exposure to “nag levels” of criticism over just a few weeks or months can actually make toddlers feel ashamed of their perceived inabilities or shortcomings. ever been through a “ but i want you to do it ” temper tantrum or experience an absolute freak out when trying to get them to do or try new things? resigning to be your child’s personal valet for life isn’t healthy, so take this to heart… not all is lost if your child is in a funk or even needs a power gulp sized refill of confidence or toddler mojo, even if you don’t have a clue where to begin. just start asking yourself the following… ten questions for understanding your toddler’s temper tantrums: what actions or requests trigger my child to throw tantrums? what am i saying with my body language during temper tantrums? do i excessively criticize my child or correct in language they will understand? do i typically respond with anger or other negative emotions? for the answers above, how often do i act this way when my toddler has a tantrum? am i getting better or worse? are the tantrums getting better or worse? what are three things i can do better the next time? how can i prevent this type of tantrum from happening again? hint, the answer isn’t giving in. what emotional support might my child be lacking? notice a trend here? to get to the root of tantrums, the focus should be on the parenting. we are the aware, self-realizing adults in the relationship. our children are new to everything and just learning their places in the world. by reflecting on your parenting and committing to act on your reflections, your child will be healthier, happier, and less likely to meltdown when they do something wrong. correct and encourage, please, oh please don’t criticize… i can’t stress this enough, it’s critical for parents to allow their toddlers to explore the limits of their abilities in emotionally safe environments where failure is , more often than not, met with thoughtful correction and encouragement, rather than criticism. it’s nothing against you… …it’s healthy and normal for children to want to take the initiative to explore new things and push the boundaries and your buttons in the process. so don’t pull your hair out thinking that something is wrong. as parents we must provide our toddlers with opportunities to grow… …and protect them from imminent or long-term dangers as they toddle around and figure things out on their own. these can be physical dangers, like stopping them from jamming safety scissors in an outlet, or emotional ones, like shielding them from the verbal abuse of strangers who don’t have a flipping clue about the challenges of being a toddler or parenting one. you know who you are flannel guy. i will find you and kill you! warning! when parents are
